After installing ubuntu the cd does not eject

Asked by new2linux

After installing ubuntu successfully it asks that I remove the CD when restarting the computer so that the installation can take effect; however, the cd will not eject regardless if i hold the eject button. In order to get the cd out, I have to turn off the computer and then turn it back on again. At this point I am able to eject the cd so that the computer will not start the installtion process again. Everything seems to have installed fine and no problems. Just wondering why this happens and if it could be resolved when the next release of ubuntu comes out.
As a comparison prior to installing ubuntu, I tried xandros and after the install the cd ejected.

So you have now installed Ubuntu on your hard disk?
If so, can you put a cd in, and then right click the CD icon on the desktop and choose eject, does it pop out?

Yes. The problem only occurrs after I have installed Ubuntu. When I get the that the installation is completed and to remove the livecd while the computer is restarting otherwise it will boot from the livecd again. When I press OK to restart the computer I am unable to have the CD eject. In order to get the CD to eject I have to turn off the computer. turn it back on again and then I am able to eject the cd and at that point Ubuntu loads and I am able to log on and make the neccessary updates that I need since Ubuntu has been installed.

That has happened to me on several installations. I found it maddening at first but since you have to reboot after installation anyhow I don't find it a big deal to remove the CD at that time. Why it should be this way I have no idea.

I am having the same problem but for me its a show stopper. I have to use the alternate install (128MB RAM). I am almost complete, but I am asked to put in another CD, which I am guessing is the normal install CD. Fortunatly I had burnt one. The problem though is that I can not eject the first CD to insert the one requested.

It asks you for another CD!?

There is no reason that the Ubuntu CD should ask for another one. The alternate CD has everything required to install. The Live CD also has everything required to install. Neither CD needs the other, or even knows about the existence of the other.

Thank you for your fast reply. I guess, I should have been more specific, but it was getting late and I was a bit frustrated. I am attempting to install xubuntu 7.04. The message I get is "Please insert disk labeled: 'Xubuntu 7.04 _Feisty Fawn_ - Release i386 (20070415)' in the drive '/cdrom/' and press enter" ... "Media change"

BTW, as the install was progressing, it sure looked like all the important stuff was done. I've built my own debian based system befor and know most of the needed packages. I saw most of them. Very confusing ???

Can you help with this problem?
