Installing Ubuntu (all versions)

Asked by Vishnu Babykumar

Hi,
Am using an Acer Aspire 1350 Laptop with a meagre config of AMD processor in the MHz range of operation (not even GHz),20GB HDD,192 MB RAM (64MB for Video),CD-RW+DVD combo & a RALINK-PCI Wireless card for net access..
It was loaded with XP-Home when we bought it & was damn slow.So I thought of installing UBUNTU...

Tried installing ubuntu 8.10 & now even ubuntu 9.04,after the initial graphical interface where we set the language,I am being taken to a black screen with a terminal-like interface..The problem I guess is with the inadequate RAM..But then I thought Ubuntu would not mind it coz XP-Home ran somewhat Ok except for the sluggishness which was bearable..Even Mandriva 09 got installed but I didnt find it friendly like Ubuntu...I badly want to see that old baby run Ubuntu!!!
So is there any way I can install this wondeful piece of OS--Ubuntu??
Plz help...

You should maybe give xubuntu a try as it needs less memory then ubuntu or kubuntu
With xubuntu, 256MB RAM is (highly) recommended but it should be able to run with 192MB also (even with 128 MB ?)

http://www.xubuntu.org/get

you can install with the normal desktop install cd : http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/9.04/release/xubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386.iso

or you could try with the alternate install CD which needs even less memory to install : http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/9.04/release/xubuntu-9.04-alternate-i386.iso

for browsing I'd recommend using dillo in stead of firefox, as firefox tends to use a lot of mem

you could also read this, although it's a bit outdated : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/LowMemorySystems

Hey thanx guyz,i tried Xubuntu but of no avail...As for Mark's suggestion, thanx dude but I am looking for a linux flavour that is like Ubuntu...one of the reasons being that I can teach how to use it to my mom who ain't that pc-literate...Ubuntu is kinda user friendly...
Well I guess it's time I considered upgrading the RAM..that might work eh?
Thanx again guyz....

Hi,

Before dismissing AntiX (which is based on MEPIS which is based on Debian -> Ubuntu is also based on Debian), I suggest reading this article:
