Problem with updating gstreamer

Asked by John Brooks

I needed to install a newer version of gstreamer, I downloaded the latest tarball from the gstreamer site. I compiled and installed it. Now there are two copies of gstreamer, one from synaptic, one from the main site, this is causing problems. how do I remove the synaptic one? If I just into synaptic and 'remove', it will remove vital packages such as 'ubuntu-desktop'

I don't know what to do. Is there a way to remove the correct pacakges from Synaptic without deleting things dependant on them? Or is there a better way?

You can remove ubuntu-desktop, it's only a meta-package and it doesn't contain any applicative data.

Can you help with this problem?
