Major ubuntu problem, unable to save history in web browser, save wireless password, install new programs and frequent program freezing

Asked by Stephie

I am new to linux.

I installed 8.01 onto my dads laptop and was extreemly impressed, in our eyes its given it back its life.
I decided to try it on my netbook which started life with just xp installed.
I have an acer aspire one, and found the 9.04 netbook remix had been tested on my netbook so installed it as a partition along side xp.

Once installed it was working fine. The first problems i came across where while i was trying to install new programs throught he add/remove programs button, and ubuntu froze. I restarted the computer but was still unable to install any programs.
I was on pigion when i think it froze and logged me out of my wireless. I ignored it at the time and shut my computer down.

When i restarted my computer the wireless password was no longer saved (i had to re enter it).
Pigion would no longer load my buddy list.
My web browser (i was using opera) would not save what i assume is history... anyway i get an error message about saving.

This is its current state.
Windows is working fine.

I have tones of HDD space left. (its a 120GB)

I cannot work with ubuntu like this however will take any steps not to go through the task of uninstalling it.

Thanks steph

Here is the error i recive when trying to install a program:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cach->open() failed, please report.

In Opera,
Each time the program opens as if it is the first time. (i have to accept licence agreements etc and my settings were not saved)
The error message i get is:

Could not save file.
/home/bugs/.opera/opera6.adr
Try again?

(Where bugs is my login name)

Perhaps this is not the history but my settings.
This message keeps popping up whether i press yes or no so it is obviously an essential file.
Firefox does not bring up any messages but will not store a new homepage for longer than that session.

I have also found that open office cannot be opened
Error:
The application cannot be started.
An internal error occurred.

When saving a new file (empty file) i recive the error:

Could not save the file /home/bugs/new file
There is not enough disk space to save the file
Please free some disk space and try again.

Through windows i can see that the partitions are as follows:

Acer (C:) 103.44GB
PQSERVICE 5.85GB (this is my restore partition)
UNKNOWN 2.33GB
UNKNOWN 173MB

If you didn't yet, you have to type in a terminal (applications > accessories):

sudo dpkg --configure -a

dpkg: failed to write status record about 'libedata-call.2-6' to '/var/lib/dpkg/status': No space left on device

It seems ubuntu does not see the other space on the HDD, surely it would have written itself a big enough partitions to begin with.

Is there any way to adjust the size of the partition?

On the NBR image there is a partition editor.....you will have to boot into a live user session and resize your ubuntu partition.
