where are my applications

Asked by Richard Rudd

Have installed lightscribe programs with package manager in Ubuntu 9.04 and they installed with no problems, they are showing up in package manager with a green square next to them but I can't find them any where, any help would be welcome, I am a Silver Surfer and a newcomer to Linux.

I didn't find anything searching "lightscribe" in Synaptic Package Manager. Would you describe in some details what did you installed?

Hello Richard,

Linux install all programs beyond the usr directory. the program that have a GUI is listed in the menu. Please try the link http://onlyubuntu.blogspot.com/2008/05/howto-install-lightscribe-in-ubuntu.html for more detailed installation informations. I think that resolve your problem.

Jürgen

Hi Vihar, I installed "lightscribe-1.18.5.1-linux-2.6-intel.deb" first then secondly I installed "lightscribeApplications-1.10.19.1-linux-2.6-intel.deb"
Package manager installed them OK but I can't find the application anywhere, thanks for getting back to me.

Hi Richard,

We would like to know what kind of Software you installed and what the installed software does. Say for example, if you have installed Firefox (Even though it is already installed, Its just an example)The firefox launcher would be available in Accessibility -> Internet.

So we would like to know what kind of software ( package ) you installed.

You marked your question as solved but it seems it's not solved for you. If so please reopen your question.
Now... may be you installed this program manually by downloading the .deb file and after that running it, which calls the package manager to work with it and install it. (May be it's a command-line program.) Open a terminal and try to run this program typing "lightscribe" and hitting Return. Post here what report did you receive from terminal, please.

Well, I went to lightscribe.com, downloaded the .deb file and installed the program. It's amazing!
Funny, the Package Manager told me it's already installed. I looked for it everywhere in GUI, I tried to run it from terminal - no any success.

And what did I mentioned in the page of LightScribe:
1. You need may be a special CD-drive: "To see if you have a LightScribe-enabled disc drive, look for the LightScribe logo (see picture at the right of this text)."
2. You need may be a special CD's: "LightScribe CDs and DVDs have a special coating that interacts with the laser in your LightScribe-enabled disc drive. You must use LightScribe CDs and DVDs in order to burn a label onto your discs."
http://www.lightscribe.com/gettingstarted/index.aspx?id=87
I haven't both. May be it's the cause why me too don't find the application anywhere.

Hi Vihar, I have both lightscribe recorder and discs, had it working fine in Vista but Ubuntu seems to fox me, I'm new to Ubuntu and find running the terminal a bit of a mystery, but I will persevere with it until I get it right, it must be frustrating trying to help someone like me, I think you have provided me with enough info for me to play around with it,
Many thanks for helping me,
Richard

where is my application?
Easy, man, I found it!

First of all did you installed BOTH the files:
1. http://www.lightscribe.com/downloadsection/linux/index.aspx?id=1372
mind this "and Labeling software also needed."
2. http://www.lightscribe.com/downloadsection/linux/index.aspx?id=1374
mind this "LightScribe System Software (LSS) must also be installed."
?

And finally look at "+ DEB Package Instructions"! There they say: "# After installation, look for the installed content in the following directory:
/opt/lightscribeApplications/

So install BOTH files #1 and then #2, go Places-->Computer-->Filesystem-->opt-->lightscribeApplications-->SimpleLabeler and doubleclick on the file SimpleLabeler. Its executive. For convenience you can drag it's shortcut from there to the upper panel, giving it a name.
I did it and it works at my desktop although I have not such a CD drive.
Tell me please if you have success.
