Epson Stylus DX4800 - not working

Asked by Tiago Silva

Well, the system detects my printer... and that's pretty much it, as it doesn't print.

What do you guys suggest?

Thanks.

The following web page details how you can debug your printing problem.

Take a look and let us know how you get on.

Can you try to remove (using Menu->System->Administration->Printing) the printer and then add it again?

Cesare, that worked!

I also noticed that the printed icon changed. Previously was a network printer and now it's a regular printer.

Noticed as well was the high consumption of ink, and the lack of double side printing.

How do I test the scanner? Should I use XSane?

Thanks.

You can check with this command in a terminal (Menu->Accessories->Terminal):

sane-find-scanner

If this utility is not installed you can install it with:

sudo apt-get install sane-utils

If the answer from sane-find-scanner is positive in principle you can use sane (your model is not explicitly mentioned as supported, but apparently you have good chances with the epson backend).

You may find quite a lot of detailed info on scanning under Linux here:

http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Scanner-HOWTO/index.html

i32542@magi:~$ scanimage -L

Well... it detects as the American version (Europe's code is DX), but that's not a problem.

One more question... what does one use for OCR here?

No idea. A quick scan of the feisty repository gave me these:

clara
Clara OCR is intended for large scale digitalization projects. It features a
powerful GUI and a web interface for cooperative digitalization of books.

gocr
A command line OCR
gocr is a multi-platform OCR (Optical Character Recognition) program.

ocrad
GNU Ocrad is an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) program based on a
feature extraction method. It reads a bitmap image in pgm/pbm format and
produces text in byte (8-bit) or UTF-8 formats.

tesseract-ocr
A commercial quality OCR engine originally developed at HP between 1985
and 1995. In 1995, this engine was among the top 3 evaluated by UNLV. It
was open-sourced by HP and UNLV in 2005.

BTW, on this last one, you may want to open a new question, perhaps you will get an answer from somebody more knowledgeable than me on this subject.

Many thanks Alan Pope and Cesare Tirabassi, that solved my question.

// Cesare, I'll check the OCR apps, and if I need help, I'll start a new question, thanks again.

I find a free online ocr http://www.online-code.net/ocr.html to convert image to text.
