How to move from Windows XP 2000 to Ubuntu 9.04?

Asked by Melinda

I'm moving my father from Windows XP 2000 to Ubuntu 9.04. Do I do this by just inserting the 9.04 live CD? Also, will his printer function properly in Ubuntu 9.04? His printer is Lex mark Z645. Thanks! Bye!

Well just like windows we have minimum requirements. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements
Just insert the cd reboot then follow the prompts.
I dont really know too much about printers.

Hope that helps
Shane

About the printer, this forum thread may be helpful: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=478687

The thread is old, so the printer may work fine out of the box. I suggest you see if you can use the printer while booted into the Live CD, and if it works there it should work when you do a full install.

About the install process, you will probably want to back up his old files, if there is anything he may need in the future. You also have the option of installing Ubuntu next to Windows, but if this is an old machine the hard drive may not be very large.

And for the printer just search with the keywords "Lexmark Z645 Ubuntu 9.04" in Google and/or here in Launchpad.
