compiz theme installer/visual effects

Two Part question really.
When I click compiz/theme installer nothing happens, I get the circle then it stops and back to desk top.
Also I am unable to install visual effects in Appearance preferences.
If anyone can help I would appreciate it very much.
 I am running ubuntu 9.04.

What do you mean by "compiz/theme"?

You dont install anything under "System / Preferences / Apperance". You just activate the effects there.

What graphicscard are you using? And do you have the driver correct installed and working?

To determine your graphics card, run this command from the terminal:

lspci | grep VGA

To check if you have direct rendering:

glxinfo | grep direct
