Network Printer not responding

Asked by Steve

New to Linux user just installed a 64bit version of 9.04 through Wubi "Running under Windows", (no dedicated partition). Installed a networked Canon Pixma MP620 printer and install appears to have gone well. I read somewhere in the Ubuntu(?) documentation that the Canon Pixma MP610 driver can be used in the absence of a MP620 driver.

When I try to print a test page, the page appears to queue up, but job queue reports that the printer is not responding and will attempt to print again in 30 seconds. This continues until I cancel the print job.

When I access the printer at its network address, 198.168.1.66, through a web browser window I can see the status of the printer as "Available" on the printer's main administrative page. And of course the printer works fine through Windows (using XP Pro).

Being completely new to Ubuntu/Linux I am at a loss as to what to try or check next. Any help would be deeply appreciated, but please - keep it simple. Thank You.

if you access

http://localhost:631

and configure the printer there. You can access the printer via web browser which means the connectivity os there. If you use the wrong driver in Linux it will not print. I would check you are using the correct driver for a start. I am unsure if wubi is a factor i nthis equation. Maybe it can use the printer installed in the windows system. I simply don't use wubi and I think it is a horrible idea at best, equalled only to the gentoo livecd.

Okay, When I bring up the Printer Configuration window I see "localhost" in the heading and "Connected to localhost" at the bottom. I assume that this is saying the system thinks the printer is attached to the computer. If this is the case, I did not properly install the printer as a network printer. There is no local printer on this system.

I accessed http://localhost:631 as directed above and attempted to follow the procedure for adding a network printer. Got past the Name/Location/Description page and and got stuck on the Device for page. I would expect that "http" or "ipp" would be the correct choice but could not determine which to use. And the Device URI page completely confused me. The examples look nothing like the descriptions offered from the "See "Network Printers" for the correct URI to use with your printer" button from the bottom of the page.

I have the IP address of the printer.
I have the MAC address of the printer.
I don't know the name of the "hostname" (presume that is easy to determine but haven't found how yet)

Would you please advise me if I should use "ipp" or "http" and how to identify the "hostname" name for the purposes of installing a network printer. Went as far as I could. Completely stumped. Please add more detail to your answer. Thank you very kindly.

I had the same problem with a MP620 on Jaunty 32 bit (job queues up, printer acknowledges job, but gives up for some reason and nothing happens) and followed the following instructions to get it to work

http://www.nervous.it/2009/04/canon-pixma-mp620-wireless-on-ubuntu/

I'm not so sure it would work on a 64 bit also though !

Can you help with this problem?
