Thanks for your question.

I guess your system is so slow, as you started the live-cd. Since every application now starts from cd, it's much slower than a installed version.

First of all: Ubuntu will never look like Windows Vista. I'm guessing you're referring to the Beryl composite manager (http://www.drebel.net/blog/blogphotos/berylscreens/beryl06.png). You will need to have a high end graphics card in order to use this extension.

The first step is still installing the system. It's quite easy if Ubuntu will be the only operating system on your pc. Just click on "Install" and follow the guided installation tour.

completely new to this and have 0 programming knowledge, so a walkthrough
or guide would be fantastic

as a windows user since windows me, im used to it all there ready, and I
notice there are no .exe files for ubuntu either

so I defenitely need a complete guide on how to install and set up beryl on

If I might add to that... You also should have a good look at the Ubuntu forums as there are How-To guides for almost everything imaginable and a wealth of knowledge on most of the standard proggys and then some... Here are a couple good starting points since you are 'new' at this.

This is the 'Absolute Beginner Talk' forum: http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=73

This is the 'Tutorials and Tips' forum section: http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=100

In all the forum areas, you can do searches as to the specific info you are looking for, be it software install or changing the settings. Try and get used to the forums as almost every 'new noob' question has more then likely already been answered at one time or another. Don't hesitate to ask questions though if you just can't seem to find what you are looking for. Most of the folks that frequent the forums are good peeps with a lot of patience and 'want to help'

Good luck and welcome to Ubuntu!!

I have even a worse prob than that. Like, how do you start? I have downloaded it but have not clue what you burn to the cd. Is it the packed file as it comes or do you have to unpack it? If so how do you go on from there? Sorry to be so thick.
