How can I restore Ubuntu to handle all programs after installing Kubuntu??

Asked by copernicus

How can I install Kubntu in Ubuntu 9.04 BUT keep all Ubuntu packages as default??
Hi All.

Is it possible to install the Kubuntu KDE environment inside Ubuntu, BUT keep all Ubuntu's Packages as Default applications when I start a program??

For example. After I installed Kubuntu in the past (In Ubuntu).
When I launched Any programs Kubuntu is in control of what Programs launch when I start a package etc etc...

How can I still have Ubuntu as my main default O/S.
And have Ubuntu's own programs start/launch when I decide to run a program or Downloaded Package etc??

I hope I have explained my issue clearly enough.

I am still enjoying learning about Ubuntu/Kubuntu

Thank's for any replies in advance

Just to clarify what you want to accomplish: Do you want to install Kubuntu desktop but still use all the GNOME apps when in your KDE desktop sessions? As in, do you want to install kubuntu without installing all the kubuntu applications? If so, the following may work for you:

sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends kubuntu-desktop

Also, in case you want to uninstall kubuntu later, it is easier to choose GDM as the default display manager.

Hi Steven.

Yes I want to install Kubuntu During an Ubuntu session and still have the choice at log on, to choose either GDM or KDE and run each session respectfullly.

But I have installed Kubuntu in the past and whilst I was in a GDM/Ubuntu session When I launched A Torrent downloader, instead of the usual ubuntu default App of Transmission starting. Kubuntu's torrent handler loaded instead of transmission.

I want to know how I can still have the the two Ubuntu and Kubuntu installed together, BUT when I launch any program. I want the original Ubuntu programs to start.

I appologise if I am not to clear in my explanations,

im pretty new to this
