ubuntu on older pc

Asked by Mark

I have a dell inspiron 2600 laptop (celeron 800 with 256 ram) which has an odd display driver. I ran an older version of unbuntu on in successfully I think it was 7.01. The older version won't pick up my realtec usb wifi but the newer version won't make my display work. I haven't downladed 7.1 for a couple years. If I download it again now will it have the newer drivers to work with my wifi and if so will it also have the older drivers for my display?

I also have an old tower with a p3 600 and 512 ram. I"d like to find linux distros to run on both computers but hardware is a big issue on both machines. I've tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu Xubuntu, suse gnome and kde, mandriva gnome and kde, Ark, PClinuxos, Gentoo, Debian, and Freespire on both machines. They all seem to have a different quirk and something doesn't work right. Help! Is there any distro out there that will just run or do I have to learn how to program to make linux work on my old crap?

Mark, try puppylinux @ http://puppylinux.com/download/index.html
It has worked on every single machine I've ever tried it on, including old klunkers.
good luck

Try Installing XUbuntu, or use a lightweight DE like fluxbox or LXDE.

As CranberryKid says, you can try lightweight systems like puppylinux, DSL, CrunchBang, Knoppix etc. They are all made for low spec systems. Your system isnt actually too bad and will EASILY run Xubuntu (an official release from Canonical). You could also try Fluxbuntu (not official but is decent - Ubuntu with fluxbox as default)

Can you help with this problem?
