Are you installing from a CD. If so, did you MD5 check the ISO? Did you verify the CD once initially booted to?

It is possible that your Ubuntu CD was not burned correctly. Try booting directly from the CD and select "Check CD for defects" to make sure this is not the case.

If your BIOS is set to allow booting from CD, and your computer will not boot from the LiveCD, it is probably not burned correctly. If this happens, I suggest you:

  1) download a new copy of the Ubuntu 9.04 LiveCD ISO
  2) check that your download worked by comparing the md5sum (see http://www.md5summer.org/ for a utility that will do this)
  3) Burn the verified ISO file to a CD using Infrarecorder (available at http://infrarecorder.org/, always works for me) -- use the "simulate" feature at first to test that your burner is functioning correctly, and uncheck "simulate" only if it completes with no errors

Your burned CD should then be certain to work. You can insert it while running Windows to do a WUBI install of Ubuntu -- this is the most pain-free option for someone just starting with Linux.
