how do I get wvdial on jaunty

I have installed 9.04 but cannot connect with dialup.
System-->Admin-->Network will not work.
I have a question logged here https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/72510 about that but have no answer yet.
pppconfig shows on the modem that I am connected but still cannot get info to or from internet. I suspect that it in to do with DNS. I have tried many variations without success.
The next method is to try wvdial. How can I get that with all its many dependencies on my other computer (8.04) to put on the 9.04 installation. Please dont tell me how to get it with wget in 9.04 because I cannot connect. Oh for the simplicity of 8.04. How will new people to Linux cope?

There may be a better way but what I can suggest is you access the "wvdial" site from some other PC connected to Internet and download the wvdial and associated packages. Copy the packages to your PC, say using a USB flash drive. Un-tar the packages and follow the instructions in README/INSTALL files. The wvdial site is

Hi Peter,
a way to get wvdial on a PC (Ubuntu 9.04) that has no access to the internet via LAN or WiFi and the modem you have is not recognized by the system (like many 3G CDMA or HSPA modems):

Download the following packages (from a pc connected to the internet, any O.S.):

1. http://packages.debian.org/lenny/i386/libxplc0.3.13/download
2. http://packages.debian.org/lenny/i386/libwvstreams4.4-base/download
3. http://packages.debian.org/lenny/i386/libwvstreams4.4-extras/download
4. http://packages.debian.org/lenny/i386/libuniconf4.4/download
5. http://packages.debian.org/lenny/i386/wvdial/download

Note that above are all for an i386 (32bit) pc.

Copy all to a USB memory stick, and then paste them to the ubuntu 9.04 running pc into:
/var/cache/apt/archives/
directory using sudo nautilus from terminal. You may install all packages by double clicking each icon (of .deb package) in above order (1,2,3,4 and finally 5). Ignore all informative messages. Finally run wvdialconf, edit the /etc/wvdial.conf file and connect with sudo wvdial.

You can get my wvdial_904_i386 zip file (size=1.41 MBytes) containing all above at:

Note: All above worked with an Asus EeePC 1000H running Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix live version booting from an SD card (all on the fly!)

P.S. I hope 9.10 will have the missing wvdial restored and usbserial as a driver again!

I downloaded http://acomelectronics.com/GeorgeVita/wvdial_904_i386.zip onto my USB flash drive and switched to 9.04. Then I decided to give pppconfig one last try and it worked. The problem was a failure to read the instructions correctly. My apologies for wasting your time but I hope your answer will be useful to somebody else. I am answering this from 9.04 and I hope updates will correct the Sys-->Admin-->network problem.
