trying to install linux/on a pc

Asked by cacy

Hi

I erased my XP Home edition while battling malware. The System Recovery Discs that came with my Vaio VGN FS810 are not working and I am getting OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND whenever I try to reboot the laptop.. Since I am getting nowhere with Windows I thought I could download UBUNTU and use that as the primary operating system on the laptop. I downloaded the .iso image via my mac powerbook.

Downloaded on a mac, the .iso reads as a dmg file. The iso was successfully burned on a disc but is not launching when I boot my pc laptop.

What am I doing wrong?
Can an installation disc burned on a mac be installed on a pc?
Please advise.

Thanks, Cacy

Hi, Hick2297

Thanks for answering my question. Unfortunately I am still having problems. I went into BIOS and set the boot to Opitical Drive. After I save the changes in BIOS and reboot, the laptop restarts from the drive but the installation does not launch. Instead I get "Operating System Not Found" message.

IN BIOS OPTICAL DRIVE IS FIRST ON LIST THEN FLOPPY THEN +HARD DISK DRIVE FOLLOWED BY NETWORK. NO PARTITIONS ON THE DRIVE.
BIOS VERSION R0090J1
EC BIOS VERSION R0090J1
VIDEO BIOS VERSION 1220

BIOS IS SHADOWED

I'm not very familiar with burning ISOs on a Mac, but there's an important difference between burning a CD from the ISO image and burning a CD with the files contained in that image. Burning the ISO image ensures that the resulting CD is an exact copy of the original, including the boot sector, which is needed if you want to boot a LiveCD. Burning an ISO correctly should create the same CD no matter what operating system was used to do it. Burning a CD with the files does not create the necessary boot sector, and will display the "operating system not found" message you are seeing.

The fact that you say your Mac is treating the ISO as a DMG makes me think you might be burning just the files by accident. See this link for more details on burning an ISO from Mac:
