s-video output for gigabyte video card

Asked by rochoppa

I am new to this, so please don't laugh. OS is Ubuntu 8.10

At start up this occurs:
While connected to the monitor (samsung, syncmaster 740n), the graphics work fine and Ubuntu desktop appears... no problem.

Yet, while connected to the tv via s-video, the graphics work fine upto the UBUNTU logo (loading screen), then the graphics go blank. However, the graphics will appear if i was to connect to the monitor.

Video card is gigabyte GV-R955256D
My tv is 130cm panasonic rear projector TX 51P15H.
Hope these help.

Is there a utility or file that can solve the issue or am I forced to go back to Mr Gates Window?

I don't program.

Go to the display manager.
system>preferences>display
Then just select detect displays.
That should get it working.
Please dont say "I don't program" because ive never had to say programme this to get something working. Answers are meant to be simple, programming is mainly required for bug fixing and new features.

Hope that helps
Shane

Hi Shane,

I have done what you recommended, however Ubuntu could not detect the display. it only detected the monitor.
I was told that s-video is not loaded as a default at star up, but wasn't told on how to initiate s-video.
would you know how to?, it would be appreciated.

cheers

Thank you Shane for your reply.

I have recently found that s-video is not the default drive.
If s-video was to be used as a monitor, the resolution would be low (grappy), being analog.
My rear projector doesn't have any digital inputs, only AV analog, thus producing a low resolution screen via PC.

This project has been scrapped, unless there is a card that can enhance the analog signal for a better resolution, but must have rca output.

cheers

Hi,

I have a dell D830 doing the same thing.... S-Video works GREAT under WINDOZE-XP but not at all under Ubuntu.
Your pathetic excuse for a solution DOES NOT WORK!!!
UBUNTU can NOT detect a monitor plugged into the svideo port....

Please provide a solution or some suggestions as to where we can get one....

Why not state that he is not a programmer?
Nearly EVERY response I have EVER SEEN on a LINUX FORUM has required a masters degree in computer science and a doctorate in Linux to decipher or make any sense out of it........
Remember that Unbuntu is now touted as a replacement workstation OS for both windoze and mack users...
This means people who barely can use a simple application may now be trying to use this OS.....

WHY IS THIS THREAD MARKED AS SOLVED!?!?!?
