install Fonts in Ubuntu 9.04

Asked by srikumar

I have followed the instructions in FAQ #98 and have installed the fonts successfully.
Thereafter the font cache was refreshed using :-
sudo fc-cache -f
Since the fonts could not be found in OO 3 word processor, the font cache was refreshed again using:-
sudo fc-cache -f -v
The terminal indicated that the fonts including those in the myfonts sub directory had been cached.
BUT still these fonts are not available in OO 3 word processor, even after re-booting.

any suggestions?

thank you

Hi there.
have you checked if you can use your fonts with other programs like gimp or abiword? are they only missing for OOo?

I do not use Abiword. I shall try gimp as suggested. Thank you.

I have gone thro the myfonts directory and find that all the fonts are marked with a "no read" emblem (an orange circle with a crossed off square). Perhaps this is the problem.

How do I remove the myfonts directory together with the fonts ? What is the terminal command to do this ?

OR how do I remove the "no read" emblem from each font file/or from all of them ?

any suggesstions ?

thank you

You could try:

sudo fc-cache -f -v -r

The -r switch clears all caches before rescanning font files.

I tried the above. It was useful since all the font folders were listed and I noted that the myfonts folder was also listed. However it did not solve the problem with OO 3.

Therefore I opened nautilus
selected all the fonts in the myfonts folder
clicked properties
opened the permissions tab
and changed the "access" (for groups & other) to "read"

Then I found that all these fonts are now available in OO 3.
