Can't install FileZilla in Ubuntu 8.10

Asked by Dante Ellis

Hi, I'm new to Ubuntu. Attempting to make the switch over from Windows to Ubuntu, and have been "trying" the last couple of years. This time I'm going to do it. I have an HP Laptop Pavillion dv5, running Vista Home Premium. I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop as a Virtual Machine (so I can learn before I take out Windows).

I run behind a Proxy Server, which I'm not the Administer for, however do have access to the Internet through it. I can connect to Firefox using the proxy settings.

I'm trying to install FileZilla. I went to the home page and downloaded two files:

FileZilla_3.2.4.1_i586-linux-gnu.tar.bz2
FileZilla_3.2.4.1_src.tar.bz2

I don't know how to take it from here and install. I went into the package manager to see if it was there (Filezilla) and it's not. Thus I downloaded these files. However, it's not like windows where it just click "setup.exe" and it goes. Can someone tell me which file to use and how to install it?

I tried copying a command from some other website that uses "wget", however wget doesn't work through the proxy I use (again I can use Firefox and connect to the Internet, but not "wget" - I think it has something to do with the proxy).

I tried to use the Update Manager, and I get the following error:

W: Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/intrepid/Release.gpg Could not connect to 206.227.165.244:8008 (206.227.165.244), connection timed out

Any help on this (getting File Zilla installed), would be greatly appreciated.

Dante

(p.s. if any great websites to learn Ubuntu, that would also be great).

Filezilla is into Section: universe/net

Please first enable the universe repository:

Open System → Administration → Software sources → [ Tab Ubuntu software ]
enable "Community Maintained open source software (universe)"
Close and don't confirm the repository reload now you must set your proxy to do it.

Then read https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/+question/50372

Hope this helps

Thanks. I enabled the universe repository.

It still didn't work, but I'm doing the steps you laid out in https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/+question/50372. I had a question here you say:

"You must also set, write them at the end of your $HOME/.bashrc:

export http_proxy="http://ip_proxy_address:ip_proxy_port/"
export ftp_proxy="http://ip_proxy_address:ip_proxy_port/""

Do I write that into the proxy gedit file I have open, or does it go into some other file?

Thanks.

Dante

Why you're taking that long way , just go to Applications->Add/Remove... and then choose 'All available applications' from the combo box there, seek after for FileZilla using the find test box, you'll find it , check it and install , and then enjoy !!

Good Luck ;)

Thanks Dilmi. I tried what you said and saw Filezilla in there, however I'm still having the same error as above when I try to download it.

I connect to a port in the wall. I don't have an IP address (it's set for automatic). In order for me to access the internet, I have to have my browsers go through a proxy server, which I have then have to authenticate. It works totally fine in windows, but I'm having trouble here in Ubuntu. I can access the internet in Ubuntu with Firefox, but the update manager and Add/Remove App's won't connect.

Any help on this would be great. Thanks.

OK , you've added a REP to software source without signing it by a GPG key , ok , that is absolutely natural and I don't call it an error , now , in order to install FileZilla , go to System->Adminstration->Software Source and click ont the Third-Party tab , then click on the key you've added and click delete because you don't need it (we've found the software in the Add/Remove window). After you do that and when you click on the close button , a message will be shown , click on the reload button , and wait till it closes itself.

Now repeat what I said before .

Good Luck ;)
