Is there a specific reason you need gtalk? If you simply want to talk to people using Google chat, you can use Pidgin Instant Messaging client, which should be installed by default in Ubuntu under Applications->Internet->Pidgin Instant Messanger.

To add a gtalk account:

1) Open Pidgin
2) Click Accounts->Manage Accounts
3) Click "Add"
4) Select Google Talk for the protocol
5) Enter your username
6) Click Add
7) Ensure the "Enabled" box next to your new account is checked in the Manage Accounts window.

Thanks Steven for your quick reply..

Reason for using gtalk is, I want to receive some files from other machine, which has gtalk installed. If my friend try to send files to me when I m logged in through pidgin, he is not able to send it.

He is working on windows system. And he is not able to install pidgin as he does not have administrator permissions.

Waiting for your reply.

Thanks

I was unaware that Pidgin's file transfer for gtalk didn't work. Unfortunately, it seems that Gtalk does not work under wine. Have you tried Empathy? It can be installed like other Ubuntu software and supports gtalk.

Can you help with this problem?
