Here you can find a checking script:
http://forlong.blogage.de/entries/pages/Compiz-Check

"Compiz-Check is a script to test if Compiz is able to run on your system/setup and if not, it will tell you the reason why."

And here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dYy_yhoYS0
is some video deskription of it and how to cheat a blacklist of Compiz, if you thing it will solve your problem.

And here ;-)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNul-ZJPK9s&feature=related
you can watch a very sad man having a similar problem.

The output of the script is ,

ramesh@RameshArun:~$ ./compiz-check

Gathering information about your system...

 Distribution: Ubuntu 8.10
 Desktop environment: GNOME
Graphics chip: VIA Technologies, Inc. CN700/P4M800 Pro/P4M800 CE/VN800 [S3 UniChrome Pro] (rev 01)
 Driver in use: openchrome
 Rendering method: AIGLX

Checking if it's possible to run Compiz on your system... [SKIP]

 Checking for hardware/setup problems... [SKIP]

At least one check had to be skipped:
 Error: openchrome driver in use

ramesh@RameshArun:~$

Did you install Compiz Fusion?
Do you have a graphics card?
-- If you do have one do you have the correct drivers (including restricted) for it to work?
