If you download the Jaunty Alternate install cd you can use that.

See: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading for more information.

Ramesh there is a application called "aptoncd" you can install this program in both computers ie yours and other's also that should also have ubuntu 8.10 from there you can copy the files onto a cd bring the cd back to your computer run aptoncd prog it will automatically copy the entire applications update and how slow is your internet connection ? and may be you are downloading from a slow server change the server to ftp.tiscali.nl it is really fast server comparing to ours Indian only iitm which is most of the time is not updated or having other problems) as these updates are not very big..should not take too much of the time also you don't need to always update so long things are working fine.
Thanks
Rajinder
