What is contained in the ubuntu's file folders?

Asked by Mike

I'm relatively new to Ubuntu and would like to know if there is a document that describes what each of the systems folders contain and what they do. I'm sure this information would help when trying to resolve software and hardware problems.

The following link is the official Filesystem Hierarchy Standard which Ubuntu adheres to.

http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html

This should give you a good overview of the layout of the filesystem in not only Ubuntu but any Linux system that uses FHS.

If you are referring to the directories within / (root), check
