Incomplete download of .rar files with rapidshare

Asked by FDPOD

Hi,

I've been having a problem after using Ubuntu 7.04 for a while now as a n00b :-)
When I download larger .rar-files from rapidshare (or others)

a.) the file extension is changed from i.e xyzdownloaded.rar to xyzdownloaded.rar.bin - this is not that big a deal because it recognizes the files still OK afterwards as a rar archive (How I can change that renaming though I'd appreciate a hint on ... )

-however the biggest problem is that ... -

b.) the file loads correctly according to the Firefox download progress bar indicator, but when I go and look at the properties of the files it always misses about a couple of bytes.
So let's say I download with Ubuntu - Firefox - 99.9 MB (104789920 bytes)
Extracting it of course produces an error.
If I download the same file with Win XP I get - 99.9 MB (104795712 bytes)
(This is not just one file but kind of 80% of all times. Some of the .rar files download fine within Ubuntu - the majority though don't)
(P.S.: I also do use rapidshare pretty frequently...)

Anybody have an idea what's the problem there ?

Well, thanks for letting me pig roast .... :-)
I guess a few things after long nights trying to figure this out on my own.

1.) NTFS-write support - as good as it might look currently - it's still not good enough : So - Do not download onto NTFS drives, partitions or folders.
I was using the NTFS driver (since I run dual boot with Win XP) just to access all my HD resources and tried saving to the NTFS portipn of the HD.
Even though NTFS write support when copying files from ext3 to NTFS is working without a problem so far (for me), there is somethings that get screwy if I save downloads from rapidshare/megauploads/etc....
If I download to the Desktop it works just fine. Duh #1!!

2.) As a secondary result of this - if the file downloads completely, it does not change the file extension to .bin any longer either :-) - Duh #2 !!
