How do I Specify Partitions manually when installing Ubunto 9.04 next to XP?

Asked by JimB

When I try to install Ubuntu 9.04 on a ThinkPad computer that has XP (and some Windows software) I have 2 partition choices: (1) the automatic partitioning which gives Ubuntu only 2.5 GB and XP the balance (142 GB) or (2) manual partitioning which I have no idea how to perform. Since XP (and my software) only requires 15 GB) I would like to partition half the hard drive to Ubuntu (70 GB) and the other half (70 GB) to XP and the windows software. How do I do this using manual partitioning?
