system locks up

Asked by rbh

After i installed 9.04 I've been having a number of problems. This is one that causes the most problems. I'm not the only user so what has happened a number of times is I try to awaken the computer and there is no sign of life, there is no pointer, no messages etc. I try to restart and it loads GRUB then the screen turns black. I found that if I press esc at the begining it brings me to a place that I can fix by an option that's available. and then from there I can continue to boot. I hope this is clear enough I don't know all the correct terminology.
Thanks RBH

OK , before we do anything on the system we should make some corrective updates on the system.
Log in normally to the default user (the administrator) and then go to System->Administration->Source of Software and do the next operations as shown in these 2 images (Check the options as in the images):

... click on the close button , a message is shown , click on the reload button , and do an update for your system. Restart the PC after , I'm sure that many problems are solved now.

If the problem persists post a comment.

Good Luck ;)

This seems like it helped. I haven't had any problems as of yet. The only thing, I don't know if this is normal is after it loads grub the screen goes blank for about 10 sec then the login screen. The 10 seconds is just longer than it used to take. If this is how its supposed to be that's fine.
Thanks RBH

I advice you to reinstall the system and do what I told you in the previous post before activating 3D effects or something and in order to fix all problems.

Good Luck ;)

Thanks, I appreciate the input. I'm so busy and lake the knowledge so I think that I'm just going to let it go. I don't mind waiting a few seconds longer. Hopefully this isn't a larger problem in the long run. It seems that since I downloaded 9.04 all the problems I have had have been resoled except for not being able to enable visual effects but I guess this is a bug that's being worked on.
Thanks for all the help
RBH

Is the bug that you are refering to in the last post about the visual effects, and the way to solve it by reinstalling the system? If this is so is this the only way or do you think it may get fixed with updates?
Thanks RBH

I mean by reinstalling the system is to use the jaunty disk and do th installtioon process again , if you don't have it , install the Intrepid disk and make an upgrade after , and when you'll get jaunty , do what I said here concerning the updates:

I have the Intrepid disk. Do I need to wipe the drive or save any info or do I just put the disk in and install it and it will keep all my settings folder etc. I'm not familiar with this at all so any more detailed instruction. If its not to much to inform me.
Thanks for the time Dilmi,
RBH

you need only to save documents in the partition where ubuntu is installed . I you don't put the cd , and format only that partiton.

Can you help with this problem?
