gksudo gedit /etc/gnome/defaults.list

Press ctrl-f and search for "x-content/video"

Replace the word "totem" with "vlc" in all 5 instances

Save and quit

Open any nautilus file browser window. For ease of use, goto Places>Home Folder

Now, click "Edit" on the menu bar at the top.

Select Preferences

Then select Media

Under "DVD Video" select VLC

I am also using a new install of 9.04 and as I was going through this to set it up gedit only comes up with three instances instead of five. I am not sure if this is an issue.

Here are the three.

x-content/video-dvd=totem.desktop
x-content/video-vcd=totem.desktop
x-content/video-svcd=totem.desktop

Thats fine, as long as they specify the player you wish to use. I don't believe this to be an issue.
