KDC is not binding to port 88 or 750

Asked by Torsten Spindler

After following the instructions on https://help.ubuntu.com/8.10/serverguide/C/kerberos.html the kerberos kdc is not listening on either port specified in /etc/krb5kdc/kdc.conf. The host is running Ubuntu 8.04.2.

$ dpkg -l | grep krb5
ii krb5-admin-server 1.6.dfsg.3~beta1-2ubuntu1.1 MIT Kerberos master server (kadmind)
ii krb5-config 1.17 Configuration files for Kerberos Version 5
ii krb5-kdc 1.6.dfsg.3~beta1-2ubuntu1.1 MIT Kerberos key server (KDC)

Problem was a run away configuration in /etc/hosts from trying to set kerberos up without DNS server. KDC does not seem to bind to local (lo) interfaces, and the KDC hostname was resolved to 127.0.0.1.
