Step by Step installing Ubuntu desktop 9.04 on Ubuntu server 9.04

Asked by Joe Mifsud

I have installed Ubuntu server edition 9.04 and like to install the desktop edition.
I am new to Linux and I am having problems trying to install the desktop on server from my Ubuntu desktop 9.04 CD. I followed the sudo apt-get install documentation but no success. I'll appreciate knowing the step by step to get the desktop installed.

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
Its the only way to do it without doing a fresh install.
You need to be connected to the internet to use apt.

Hope that helps

Thanks Shane.
Was hoping that someone might have a procedure for installing the desktop on the server from CD.
Currently the server is not configured or connected to the internet.
My next task is to setup the server to connect to the internet and try the sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop.

Couldnt you just do a fresh install of ubuntu. All you have to do is back up your data and stick in the cd and restart.

I already have a desktop and a server installation on two separate machines.
I am hoping to be able to install the Gnome GUI on the server machine and use this
instead of the terminal.
My issue is that I don't know my way around Ubuntu (or linux) to sort this out myself.
I am still converting from Windows.

On the server machine is there any files that you need?

At this stage it is just a bare server installation. I have no specific files that I need.

Then do a clean install of ubuntu using the desktop disk.

I already have a bare desktop edition installed. Sorry, I don't follow.
What is the purpose of reinstalling a clean desktop.
I need the server edition with the Gnome GUI installed, which I was hoping to install from the Desktop CD
I purchased.
May be I should try your first suggestion to install from the Internet.
