Asked by guidemeintheeyesofblindness@yahoo.com

Is there a program that shows the different phases of the moon that will work in xubuntu? Like a lunar/moon calendar?

glunarclock doesn't seem to work in xfce.

Please explain which problem you experience, in case error messages. Is there a 'report a problem' in the menu of this app available?

In the meantime try:
apt-cache search lunar

apt-cache search lunar gave me this:

glunarclock - GNOME Lunar Clock moon applet
liblunar-1-0 - Chinese Lunar library
liblunar-1-0-dbg - Chinese Lunar library
liblunar-1-dev - Development files for the Chinese Lunar library
liblunar-1-doc - Documentation for the Chinese Lunar library
lunar - Chinese Lunar Calendar conversion utility
lunar-applet - GNOME Clock applet with added Chinese lunar calendar support
python-lunar - Python bindings for the Chinese Lunar library

I'm confused

Hi again,
apt-cache search tells you that glunarclock is available from official source via e.g. Synaptic.
You may try the regular way of installation via Synaptic or:

sudo apt-get install glunarclock

It's an applet and will appear on the panel, that's it.
No need for gdebi.
Packages directly downloaded from internet (not via integrated package manager) are there where you told the download+save popup window to put it.
Usually at the desktop.

Nope no go.

Sudo apt-get install glunarclock did nothing. The applet is nowhere to be found.

But it showed up in the output you've posted above.
Please open Synaptic type in search inbox glunarclock, right click -> install and then click on apply in the above main menu.
Should be from universe sources, maybe you need to activate it before, in
system administration -> software sources

I checked synaptic and it was already installed. So I marked it for Re installation.

Nope no go at all.

What exactly do I do with software sources you mentioned above?

No applet anywhere at all. No icon, nothing.

In Ubuntu it appeared in "add new items" to the panel option. I simply clicked on it from there.

I'm running xubuntu now and it does not appear in "add new items."

Nothing yet.

Ok. Try the following:

1) From the command line run the following command:

 sudo apt-get install xfce4-xfapplet-plugin

2) Now, from the "Add new Item" menu on your panel add the xfapplet plugin. This should add a small icon to your panel.

3) Right-click on that icon and hit "Properties"
4) You should then see a list of installed gnome-applets
5) Select one and hit OK.

Hnn... this is a little ancient, but since I got here from Google, let's leave it for the record:

- The OP is using xubuntu and xfce
- glunarclock is a *gnome* panel applet; there's no way to get it to run on the xfce panel
- To my best knowledge, there's no moon phase applet for xfce

However, there's an applet that allows you to run gnome applets... I don't remember what it's called (stopped using xfce about 2 years ago). If you can find that one, you can use it to wrap glunarclock.

Good luck!

FYI: I've moved all the indicators I've done (including indicator-lunar) under one PPA located at https://launchpad.net/~thebernmeister.

Hi Diego,

All of my indicators, including indicator-lunar, are (currently) English only.

Several months ago, I looked at making all my indicators support i18n. With my other Java projects, I implemented i18n quickly and easily. I found with Python (the indicators are written in Python 3), i18n is not so obvious. I had a lot of trouble understanding the build process and framework for i18n on Linux.

I am aware LaunchPad provides automatic translation. However this only works if I use LaunchPad as the source code repository. I only use LaunchPad to distribute the software and so the auto translate feature will not work.

I have already had an offer of another translator to make a Spanish version. As I said above, the translating is not the problem here; the problem rather is figuring out how to put i18n into my build process. I'm sure it's not that difficult, so when I get some time I will look again at i18n but right now I'm busy on other things.

In the meantime, you could edit your installed copy (/usr/share/indicator-lunar/indicator-lunar.py) and change the strings yourself. This is probably the quickest and simplest solution for you now.

Cheers.
