Ubuntu 9.04 hangs on boot, very slow, please help!

Asked by ubuntin

Hi!

For no apparent reason Ubuntu 9.04 -64bits, now it is taking a lot of time to boot. It goes fast to Grub, but after loading the kernel it hangs for like 1.5 to 2 minutes, makes the processor run faster and then loads the login screen.

I have dual-boot XP and Ubuntu, in Laptop Presario R3000, AMD 64, 768 RAM.

I have no problems with XP.

I don't now what happened, Ubuntu was working fine las time I used it, weeks ago.

I am installing bootchart, for troubleshooting.

I am new to Linux.

Any help, will be greatly appreciated,

Ubuntin.

Can you please provide:

uname -a
lsb_release -a
dmesg

dmesg will be VERY big and you may want to get it on here with this

dmesg > ~/dmesg.txt; gedit ~/dmesg.txt

if you use kde, replace gedit with kate

you can then copy / paste the text to here for us to read. dmesg shows a log of the kernel and what it does as soon as it is loaded. It will show hardware coming online, usb devices and firewire devices being detected and configured. partition mountings etc etc. all useful stuff

We can't see that, that is a file on your local computer and not the internet. If you put the image on a picture sharing site like photobucket or tinypic then we can view it

Can you please provide the information above which I asked for, you copy and paste the outputs from the terminal to here so we can read them.

Thanks

Sorry, I try to copy paste the .png file but it doesn't work that way.

I update to the latest kernel in: Updates proposed for jaunty (I normally don't use those updates) to 2.6.28-12-generic it helped a little, still very slow, but now processor does not run fast on boot, it is more relaxed.

In verbose mode, I observed that the boot process stops for a minute (hangs) in here:

[ 2.192552] ohci_hcd 0000:00:02.0: enabling device (0004 -> 0006)

After stopping there for a minute or so, again goes fast until Log-in screen

Thanks,

Ubuntin.

P.D. Why is that it is no possible to attach a picture in here?
Can you please erase my previous message whit the bootpart report?

You are right about the device being slow. You will need to find out what is going on. I searched the output of:

sudo lshw > ~/lshw.txt; gedit ~/lshw.txt

and found:

Seems to be related to USB ports so you may need to try booting with no usb devices attached. If you use an external usb hub of some sort, try booting without it attached, see if the situation improves.

You will need to investigate yourself and read dmesg each time you boot to see if its any better and at what time it hangs.

by the way, hiding your pc name does very little ;)

Thank you, so much.

I found the source of the delay, I have a logitech wireless usb mouse.

I have 2 usb ports I believe 1.1, in the left side of my Laptop and 1 usb port I believe 2.0 in right side.

If I attach the mouse usb wireless stick (the one which sends the signal), to either of the 2 left usb ports, Ubuntu hangs on boot. If I attach the mouse usb stick, to the only usb port, it works fine, no hanging of Ubuntu at booting.

Any way, I am uninstalling Ubuntu, linux is too geeky for me.

By the way, I didn't mean to offend your sensibility by hiding some info. like my pc name, I did that, because this info. is going to be public and some how, I wanted to keep my privacy as possible, sorry for my ignorance.

Again, thank you for your help.

Ubuntin.

Hi actionparsnip,

I'm exactly in the same situation as ubuntin, same laptop and same problem with the two USB1.1 ports on the laptop's left-side.
What makes me confused is that I have been using Ubuntu since version 5.04 and this is the first time I come into this problem... so what happened? Is this a bug of the brand new 2.6.28 kernel?...
I have been "googling" for days looking for a workaround, since actually I need to use all my USB ports with 1.1-compliant devices...
Well, I would be really grateful to you if you could give me any suggestion about where to look for a good workaround...
Thanking you in advance.

i'm having similar problems, in as much as my laptop needs the usb wireless receiver (dongle for v220 wireless optical mouse) plugged in to boot properly. If I remove the dongle while the machine is running, also hangs.

Here's my post regarding it:

to be clear, my system boots in good time, not slow at all.
