Freeze with Jaunty for Intel 915 user

Asked by roger64

I have been a Ubuntu user for three years. I updated from Intrepid to Jaunty four weeks ago.
I have an rather old Toshiba Satellite laptop with an Intel 915 and one Pentium M processor. I use Compiz since Edgy (well, Beryl first ).

Everyday (sometimes twice a day) my screen freezes. The arrow's mouse can still move but no action is possible and I have to reboot. I cannot link the freeze to any particular package or particular activity. It happened online and not online, with Firefox and OpenOffice. I use suspend to RAM but the freeze occurs sometimes a long time after resume.

Yesterday I installed the new drivers for Intel cards at WebUpd8 repository but it changed nothing.

I read reports in our French forum of other users complaining. I am sorry to be unable to fill up a real bug report because I can't attribute it to any package.

I stay at your disposal for other information you could need.

First, you can add the ppa on this page to keep your intel drivers up-to-date with a relatively stable branch:

https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates/

I am liking a bug report (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/365994) that seems to match the issue you are experiencing.

Also, you might want to try switching to UXA, directions for which can be found on this page:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/IntelPerformance

However, I only had limited success with moving to UXA and some people have experienced problems with UXA.

Can you help with this problem?
