ubuntu needs direct zip, rar, mp3 suppourt.

Asked by Colton

Ubuntu if you are there! Please, you need to add direct suppourt for more common files like zip, rar, mp3 and other common windows formats.
And by the way, mounting should be a lot easier than have to use terminal, or getting a program. A graphical program should be built in to Ubuntu

All of the formats you mentioned can be opened in ubuntu after installing a few packages, a process that is very easy. For information on mp3 and other formats see:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/

For information on zip, rar and other formats see:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FileCompression

.zip files are supported by default in Ubuntu. Zip files can be opened using the archive manager. If you have been unable to open zip files you should run the following command:

sudo apt-get install zip

Also, in a default Ubuntu setup mounting the large majority of drives and file systems happens automatically. If you have been having a specific problem mounting a drive, please provide a bit more information so we can help.

Thank you for your question.

Whilst we don't support all of the file types you list on a default install (for a variety of reasons both legal and philosophical), it has been made as easy as possible to add the functionality required, as the comment above details.

If you're still having a specific problem then let us know and someone will try and help.

Regards,

Andy

Actually, I found another way, Its hard but worth it.
You need to install wine windows compatibility layer for linux.
Then go to google and search "free rar extract frog"
You should find a download at download.cnet.com
download and then install it with wine.
There! You have a graphical .rar extractor!

I use itunes for my mp3's.

and well duh archive manager has zip format.
(my problem was the file i was using had "2" extensions e.g. File.123.zip)
so i just had to rename it!
