updates

Asked by gary

Hi,
When my computer updates it has such large amounts of files and I run out of disc space and the computer is then unstable. Can I change what updates it looks for, so it does not put new programs on the computer? I use unbuntu 8.04+ Thank you

Sure you can. Open the software sources and select the updates you want from the Updates tab.

But I do not recommend removing Important security updates from the list.

How large is your hard drive? If it's lower than 40GB, get an additional HDD with a larger capacity.

Assume a misconception

Updates don't install new 'programs', they update what was already installed.
However some libs might be new and the old one doesn't get removed automatically, for this one can use 'deborphan'.
Here since Edgy used space increased about 200MB without reinstallation. Preinstalled applications which are not in use don't take much space.
The only thing I do is regular removing former kernel images.
