issue installing linux on averatec 3225hs

I have tried numerous versions of unbuntu on my averatec 3225hs none of them will get to the x session.

specs....amd mobile 2200
512 ram
80g drive
cd/dvd drive
14.3 monitor
s3 graphics controller

any help you can give would be awesome i really want to get linux on to that machine its running windows xp home right now and wow it sux i want a better performance seriously and to have fun with a new os

Have you tried the "startx" command at the prompt? If this doesn't work, try sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start.

i have tried the startx command also tried to reconfigure xorg file but it says no

Have you tried starting the GDM?

Also, when reconfiguring the xorg configuration file, you are using "gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf", right?
