Hello,
Thank you for your question. I would not recommend installing Automatix on any Debian based distribution. Automatix has been known to mess up MANY Ubuntu systems. Here is a good link describing how to mount and write to NTFS partitions with Ubuntu. http://www.arsgeek.com/?p=585

Hello,
I would not recommend installing Automatix either but there is a better method than Jayson link.

Yes, there is no ntfs partition on it. How did you install ubuntu. If you chose to use the entire disk, it would have overwritten your existing partition. Or do you have a second drive that is not detected?

Thanks-I have to say i'm a bit confused about the exact steps-i started off to do a dual boot but i came up against a no go so i thought i was installing into a free space on the disc.
So i guess i'm after confirmation of whether or not any windows XP files still exist if partitions have been over written? No second drive.

Considering the fdisk -l output you postet, i'd say the files are gone.
You really seem to have reformatted the whole disk. I'm sorry about the bad news, but be sure, that already happend to a lot of us others too.
Another hint:
Consider wiping your disk again and put your /home folder on a seperate partition, that will help prevent this kind of dataloss in the future.
