Ubuntu 9.04 / No-WPA Works / With WPA Does NOT Work/ USB Zonet ZEW2505

Asked by SSamon

(Note: the original summary was "issue with wpa zonet usb ZEW2505")

Hello, I am having an issue with connecting to my Wireless Router from my laptop using a Zonet ZEW2505 Wireless 802.11g USB stick. I've searched, installed, reinstalled, configured wpa_supplicant, etc... for the past few weeks with still no fix.

If I set my wireless router to use no encryption, then I have NO problems connecting with the ZEW2505 Wireless 802.11g USB stick.
(Note: wired connections work fine as well)

If I set my wireless router to use WPA/WPA2 (WPA_TKIP_OR_AES), then I CAN NOT connect using the ZEW2505 Wireless 802.11g USB stick.

The following are some of my specs:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ubuntu 9.04
Dell Latitude C640
Zonet ZEW2505 Wireless 802.11g USB stick
(Strong signal strength)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wireless Network Drivers GUI Tool (installed Windows driver "netmw225")
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
wpa_supplicant.conf:
     network={
      ssid="myWLAN"
             #scan_ssid=1 # only needed if your access point uses a hidden ssid
             proto=WPA2 #also tried with "WPA" with no luck
             key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
             psk=###LLL####LLL####L#L##LL
    }
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
$ sudo wpa_supplicant -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS
Trying to associate with 00:##:##:##:##:## (SSID='myWLAN' freq=2437MHz)
Associated with 00:00:00:00:00:00

Please help!
Thanks!

Hello, SSamon. :-)

Try these commands to see if we can get you up and running. :-)

"sudo rmmod ssb"
"sudo modprobe wl"

If you have a "Wireless" light on the front of your machine, it should turn on, change the proper color, etc. if this command helps at all. It will take up to five minutes, however, before you can connect to your network.

It should work, but I'm not sure how this works after rebooting, so you might have to manually configure it to start at boot.
Try navigating to /etc/crontab, and entering

"@reboot root <sudo rmmod ssb>"
"@reboot root <sudo modprobe wl". :-)

Also, if you want to run this as a regular user, replace root with your username.

Also, you can add "sudo rmmod ssb" and "sudo modprobe wl" to the end of /etc/init.d/rc.local.

You do each of these with "gksudo gedit /etc/crontab" and "gksudo gedit /etc/init.d/rc.local", respectively. :-) Also, if you're having some permissions issues, run "sudo chmod o+wx /etc/crontab" or "sudo chmod o+wx /etc/init.d/rc.local".

I hope I've been of some help, and that I've solved your question. :-)

Keep me posted.

Best to you, and good luck!

Sorry, I've misread your question. I will address it, but it will most likely be pretty long, like the previous post, so I wanted to let you know that I indeed know the real problem here. :-)

Thanks for the response.
Should I wait for your next post, or should I still try?
"sudo rmmod ssb"
"sudo modprobe wl"

It wouldn't hurt, but I'm guessing it probably won't help either, since you mentioned that it thinks the wireless is up and running.

Go ahead, and try it, as I'd like to see exactly what happens.

Keep me posted. :-)

Thanks again, here are the results (as well as output from other commands):

I don't think any of the hardware related commands are that helpful because it can't be a hardware problem if I'm able to connect without encryption?

Hmm.. Everything seems fine. This is very strange.

I'm sorry that this is the best help I can offer, but perhaps you can reinstall the driver, and see if that fixes the problem?

Also, before you do that, could you post the results of your xorg.conf?

Here it is:

Okay, that didn't really help. I'm sorry. Have you tried reinstalling the driver?

Hi, (I edited the summary of my issue).
I actually reinstalled the entire OS and then reinstalled the driver--having same issue.

I noticed that I am having the exact same issue as Fast-Feet (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...&highlight=wpa), but I need to use ndiswrapper because I don't think the manufacturer has any linux drivers.

Thanks, but this didn't help.
I believe I have the correct windows driver being used by ndiswrapper.
I tried a bunch of different windows drivers, but only the original one (I got from the Zonet installation CD) seems to work.

Note: I am able to intermittently connect to my router if I select "Link-Local Only" under "IPv4 Settings" but this doesn't allow me to access the web, etc...

Any other ideas?

UPDATE: I tried using wicd instead of Network Manager.
With wicd, it hangs while performing "Obtaining IP Address..." and ultimately fails.
I'll revert back to Network Manager.

Perhaps I'm having a networking/dhcp/etc... issue?

Hi,

Have you tried disabling encryption and enabling SSID broadcasting on the router? When encryption is disabled on the router, can wicd successfully connect?

If it can, then try enabling WEP on the router and then configure WEP in wicd and try connecting again...

If WEP works, increase security level to WPA2 on the router and retry. This is how I would try to solve this. First simplify the problem by first disabling security.

I know you already tried this procedure using NetworkManager, but I suggest trying this using wicd instead.

Maybe the ndiswrapper drivers only support WEP encryption or no encryption at all.... In that case, someone would need to develop native Linux drivers for your card so that WPA2 is also supported...

Regards,

Mark
