INSTALLATION FROM NEW CD

Asked by DAVID

I have purchased a CD to install Ubuntu 9.04. from the Linux Shop. I have Linpus installed (it came with the computer) This version of Linux has problems and so I wish to replace it with a better system. I can boot from the DVD drive but when I do all I get is the menu for the Functions. No matter which boot option I choose I get only a blank screen except for a few lines of characters along the bottom quarter of the screen. The word BUG is followed by a few lines of characters (numbers and zeros) and then the work STACK comes next followed by more lines of characters.

I have contacted the seller just in case it's a faulty disk, but if it's not what could be the problem? Can I install Ubuntu 9.04 while Linpus is installed.? If not how do I remove Linpus?

Hope you can help me

Thanks

Hi David

I don't know precisely why that happens, although my best guess would be a bad disk. But what's already installed should have no effect on trying to boot from CD. The computer will find the CD and boot from it before it even looks at a hard drive.

Hope that helps

If you like to try another LiveCD, in case of problems the Alternate is a good choice.
LiveCD or Alternate content a partition tool.

The link includes all the information about installation e.g. from LiveCD including a partition manager.

Download .iso, burn .iso, boot from CD, install Ubuntu, done.

I have exactly this same problem. I am trying to install Ubuntu on an old Compaq Presario with an 800 MHz Athlon with 384Meg of ram. Currently this computer is running Windows 2000 although it came with Windows 98.

I have downloaded the Ubuntu CD multiple times ( using a G5 Mac ) and have verified the MD5 on both Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Sever editions. The computer crashed if I try to start live booting from the CD or if I try to install Ubuntu on a hard disk. I have tried graphics safe mode, and all of the boot options under f6. I even tried using another optical drive.

If you like, I can upload a photo of the screen when the computer crashes. I'm guessing that there is some hardware that the installer doesn't like.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks to the people who replied to me. This is what happened. In fiddling with the PC I managed to snap off the coffee cup holder and so couldn't insert DVD's any more. As the machine was purchased over a year ago very cheaply and was going to be a stop gap before getting an up to date model I decided I could not afford anymore time on this problem so I bought a new PC which came with Vista Business on it and so I reverted back to what I am used to, In fact this was my second go at Linux - last year I had my company's technical support put windows on the machine because of the problems with Linpus- this year I tried again with the same result - back to Windows.

All in all the change to Linux has not gone smoothly, and I have given up for good now. By the way the Linux Shop who supplied me with goods has no contact details whatsoever - no phone, no address, only an e-mail form. Since advising them by this method of my problems with my disks I have heard nothing. in fact I have e-mailed them twice and they ignore customers - so I am suspicious of them now.
I include web address http://www.thelinuxshop.co.uk/catalog/index.php.
If they do turn out to be OK I will post a message to that effect

Thanks again

Sorry you had a bad experience, and do feel free to try again if you have spare time. Remember, you needn't buy CDs, you can download and burn your own on CD-Rs from Ubuntu.com, and Ubuntu generally plays nicely with Windows.
