You cant without an internet connection. A fresh install from a ubuntu desktop cd it the easiest way to install it without installing through apt.

Hope that helps

Hi Amar,

I don't know if this work, but you can try it.
- Insert your ubuntu desktop 8.04.1 LTS on your CDROM, then run this command:
  $ sudo apt-cdrom add

- Edit your sources.list in order not to connected with the internet, just your Ubuntu CD

- Then run this command:
  $ sudo apt-get update

- You will get some error there (I guess..)

- If you want to install gnome, first try this command:
  $ sudo apt-cache search gnome-desktop-environment

- If the output like this:
  $ sudo apt-cache search gnome-desktop-environment
  gnome-desktop-environment - The GNOME Desktop Environment

- Then you can install it from you Ubuntu CD

Have a nice try.. let me know if you have any trouble.
Cheers..
