Can't install motherboard drivers from CD on Jaunty

Asked by JeremyJHarrison

I just bought a new computer without an operating system and a Zotac mother board with nVidia Geforce 6200 chipset (onboard) and the first thing i did was install Ubuntu 9.04. It doesn't register that i have a graphics card or any other form of hardware driver.

The motherboard has an Zotac installation cd, which I inserted and found an 'autorun' file. I'm assuming the autorun only executes with windows.

Is there anyway to install the motherboard driver's on Ubuntu?

I also don't have an internet connection because i haven't figured out how to configure my aol dial up service on Ubuntu.

Pls help. Any help will be much appreciated.

You dont need any drivers to be installed. Linux has there own drivers because the windows drivers dont work using the linux kernel. Just keeping your system up to date using the update manager is fine.

Hope that helps

I have to install the mother board drivers because as of right now i have no sound drivers or video drivers and cannot listen to anything or enable any desktop effects.

For the graphics card drivers. Go here any drivers available will be listed there.
System>Administration>Hardware Drivers
If the drivers are installed it could be just metacity not being turned off that was my problem with enabling compiz.

The sound is a separate issue. I dont know what this issue is, someone with more information about this area would be able to offer an answer.

When i enter System>Administration>Hardware Drivers it says that there are no propietary drivers registered.

Once I disable metacity would that then allow me to enable advanced desktop effects in System>Preferences>Appearance>Visual effects? I would like to start with that but it keeps stating that it cannot enable desktop effects.

Also, I was considering 'dual booting' or running windows xp from an external hard drive inside of ubuntu. If i were to run the installation disc in Xp do you figure that it would then register i've installed the chipset in Ubuntu?

Try this go to system monitor. System>Administration>System monitor
Go to the processes tab and disable metacity then try enable desktop effects.

There is no need to register your chipset.

When I end process on metacity and then try to enable desktop effects the screen flashes and says desktop effects could not be enabled and then metacity comes back up and then continues running.

haha it's quite alright. I appreciate your help though, thank you. I suppose i'll re-open the question and keep looking into my graphics card.
