.dat file not opening in 9.04

I can't play a .dat file in my ubuntu Jaunty. Need help.

And what do you want them to be opened with? Ubuntu knows nothing about dat files if they are not plain text.
If they are, just right-click, select "Open with..." (or so) and select Text Editor (gedit).
If they are NOT plain text files, then you should know the exact application to open them. If you mean some strang music format, try to open it with:
a) Totem
b) Xine
c) gnome-mplayer or smplayer or kmplayer or mplayer-gui
d) VLC
