how to fix the broken packages when enabling drivers

I'm using using the ubuntu 9.04 desktop edition, when i'm trying to enable the desktop effects or trying to play any .mp3 extension it is giving me the error that "You have held broken packages". its is also giving me the same error when i'm enabling the nvidia driver. i have Nvidia Quadro Fx500/600 in my system, please help me out......

You might try reinstalling the packages indicted whit: sudo dpkg -i PACKAGE.deb

Hey Ahmer,

        Try this:

Go to Synaptic Package Manager and at the bottom it'll show you if you have any broken packages.If you have any then go to Edit -> Fix Broken Packages.

That ought to solve your problem.
