ubuntu can not boot in gui mode

Asked by Rommy

Hi,

I am using dual boot (win xp and ubuntu). I installed ubuntu 8.04 and upgrade it online to Ubuntu Interpid ibex (8.10). I try to put ubuntu studio package on it via synaptic. But now, my ubuntu can not access to gui mode and prompt me to access in command prompt (terminal mode).

Please kindly assist me asap.

Thanks

Rommy

Hello, Rommy. :-)

You need to start the X server manually. With that, you log in regularly (you will not see your password as you type it in), and then run the command "startx". If that does not work, type this command "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start".

I hope I've helped.

Best to you, and good luck.

Also, after that, you can configure your GDM to run at bootup.

Bryan,

Thanks for your quick response.
Finally i can get into ubuntu gui, but i can not get in automatically. I still have to log in from command prompt by typing startx. What is GDM? How should i do to run GDM at bootup?

Oh.. another thing comes up on my mind. How should i do to upgrade to Ubuntu 9.04 (Ubuntu latest release) without missing all application, repository, documents, and webserver settings?

Thanks

Rommy

Rommy,

Good, I'm glad that worked out.

All right, GDM stands for GNOME Desktop Manager. The GDM works hand in hand with the X server.

You can get it to start at bootup by enabling that option in the BootUp Manager. You can install this with the command "sudo apt-get install bum".

I really hope starting the GDM is enough, but if not, I have something else that might work.

As for your other question, that's a tough one. There's no real way to just safely upgrade.

I assume that you are currently using Intrepid Ibex (8.10).

The following procedure will try very hard to keep all settings, applications, etc. It is not, however, failsafe.

First, start System --> Administration --> Update Manager. Then, click the "Check" button to check for new updates.

If there are any updates to install, use the "Install Updates" button to install them, and press "Check" again after that is complete.

Then, a message will appear informing you of the availability of the new release. Click "Upgrade" and follow the on-screen instructions.

If you are looking for an alternative way, I might have an idea, but it would take a bit longer, for sure, and might be a little more dangerous.

Anyway, I hope I've been of some help. :-)

Best to you, and good luck.
