ACPI Issues and More with 9.04 Jaunty
Here I am again, with some more interesting issues.
My custom PC apparently has an ACPI/BIOS issue with 9.04. I'm not certain if that's causing the other problems, but we'll get to those later.
AMD 6000+
Asus Crosshair MOBO

The first few things that I get before bootup, but after the BIOS post is:
-------
[0.928590] ACPI: Expecting a [Reference] package element, found type 0.
Then, this posts. It posts so fast that I had to take a movie of my screen so I could find out what it was saying.
[10.453887] [Firmware Bug]: powernow-k8: Your BIOS does not provide ACPI _PSS objects in a way Linux understands. Please report this to the Linux ACPI maintainers and complain to your BIOS vendor.

After that, it loads. Upon the first installation, my mouse (MX1000 Logitech Wireless {not Bluetooth}) only works about half the time for buttons and selectable items. Fortunately, I know how to use my keyboard to circumvent this inconvenience. Also fortunately, the first batch of updates for 9.04 fix the mouse problem.
But I'm having trouble with the hardware drivers (the proprietary nVidia 180.44 driver), and the nVidia X Server Settings. Aside from the minor detail of when I first start up the X Server Settings - the picture keeps stalling until you grab the window and move it around - there's this startup issue that looks like a panning issue.
When I first start up, I do get my native resolution, but just up in the top left corner in the screen. The bottom part and the right hand side are empty blackness, until I move the cursor up to the top left, and then my whole desktop moves into position. It's sort of like having your desktop set for 1280x1024, and then setting up the panning for 1920x1080. You get all that extra black space on the sides.
But under panning, it shows the exact same resolution as my native desktop size, and so does the metamode (1280x1024@75 +0+0). After I retype the panning, and reselect the metamode and apply, the extra space goes away.
A possible issue is that Ubuntu absolutely refuses to recognize my monitor (it calls my Samsung SyncMaster 712N LCD a CRT-0). I do vaguely recall that in v7.10 I could specify what monitor I was using, but I haven't found the same utility from 8.04 since then.
Here's my previous thread, just in case anyone needs a reference point with regards to my resolution.
I'm thinking it's time for a computer upgrade. My Fujitsu laptop has 9.04 (granted, with ext3), and it works flawlessly.
One of these days, I'm going to see what happens to the laptop when I convert the HDD to ext4.
Thank you for reading and your time!
