Ubuntu Still killing notebook hard drives?

Asked by iyanome

I want to dual boot 9.04 with vista premium, and I have the resources for that. however, i want to know if ubuntu is still destroying notebook drives with its aggressive power management. I have a link to the original bug report.

I would appreciate any help!

a notebook drive is good for about 600,000 drive cycles. I heard of someone who in under just 7 months of using his new notebook, had around 610,000. Which is not unheard of :(at least to see a drive go past an assumed number of cycle loads) just that the time it took to get there was INSANE! i dont feel like replacing my drive every half year

They indeed did something. On my IBM T43 the Bug is nearly gone f.e..
Look in here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi-support/+bug/59695

They changed the way, that it's not that (or not at all) aggressive on power management while on AC.
And as most Notebooks are on AC the most time... it is a kind of OK.
