The new startup screen simply isn't detecting the correct settings for your screen. This may depend on your screen resolution and video card. The same thing happened to my Dell laptop with 8.10 when I used the 64-bit installer disc. The screen was black when booting, but Gnome worked just fine. When I later installed the 8.10 32-bit version the start up screen worked. And now in 9.04 64-bit it works just fine.

As long as this doesn't affect the operation of your Desktop, I would consider it a minor glitch. Since the new startup screen is relatively new, there is a good chance that a future update of Ubuntu will fix the issue.

I would recommend that you use the 32-bit version if you haven't used Ubuntu extensively with the machine unless the machine has 4 GB of RAM or more.

You do not have to erase the existing data for either a Windows or existing Ubuntu install. When you insert the 9.04 disc while running the 8.04 desktop there is a very good chance it will offer to perform an upgrade. This has worked well for me in the past, simply log in to the desktop, insert the new Ubuntu disc and let it perform the upgrade.

This bug report describes the problem that I think you are having:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usplash/+bug/147623

You can try the workaround described on that page to verify that this is the error.

I JUST WANT EVERYONE TO KNOW THAT UBUNTU 9 IS MORE OF A DOWN GRADE THEN AN UPGRADE!!!!!!!
WHEN I HAD UBUNTU 8 IT RAN MUCH FASTER! AFTER I UPGRADED TO UBUNTU 9, I CAN SEE HOW EVERYTHING SLOWED DOWN, AND MY SCREEN SAVER WERE SLUGGISH AND MY FLASH AND JAVA DID NOT WORK AND WOULD NOT RELOAD FROM THE PRIVIOUS WEB PAGES. SO TAKE HEED PEOPLE UBUNTU 9 STILL NEED ALOT OF WORK!!!!!
