Some recent update slowed/broke 22.04.4 LTS

Many GUI functions very slow or dead, like xterm middle button paste.

I can only paste in xterm with the help of copyq.

The paste problem comes and goes. (I recall when there was one clipboard for xterms and browsers, and xterm paste could paste trailing newlines, but everything gets improved . . . .)

This system is not the latest and fastest, a 2 core amd but with 16G ram and SSD. I do get weird things like 1) chrome/aol web mail falsely saying my internet is down, or 2) chrome and other apps reporting no response, wait or kill, or 3) no response to clicking a tab but minimize works, 4) tab drop down dialog synopsis not dismissing, all intermittently. The no paste thing is new.
