desktop effects cannot be enabled in 9.04. it worked fine in 8.10

Asked by Sunny Hira

I am not able to select 'extra' visual effects in appearance.

On clicking it, a window pop up comes that says "looking for driver" then it says "desktop effects cannot be enabled".

I am currently using 9.04 on my compaq presario v3700 laptop. This problem did not exist when using 8.10.

Please help me out!

Cheers!
Sunny

Dear Sunny,

This same problem, with exactly the same messages you're getting, happened to me too when I first upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 on my Acer Extensa 5620-6419. However, one of the recent updates corrected the situation.

I recommend that you go into the Synaptic Package Manager, first click on "Reload," then click on "Mark All Upgrades," and then click on "Apply." This will obtain and install all of the outstanding updates including the one(s) necessary to allow CompizConfig Settings Manager and Simple CompizConfig Settings Manager to function to your preferences.

I check for updates using this method at least once a day.

Thanks a lot for your helps guys.

@Lawerance - I check for updates on a daily basis as well. I did try out updating from Synaptic Package Manager as you said, but no luck. All updates have already been installed.

@konq_runner - It's an ATI graphics card "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 Up to 251MB available". There are no restricted drivers in the Hardware Driver list.

@Tom - Yes, I think i'll just have to wait for now.

Cheers,
Sunny

Hi Sunny,

there seem to be several interconnected problems with on-board Intel graphics or Intel chips build into ATI cards (- check out the Jaunty release notes).

Currently, there is a set of experimental drivers that were - so far - not integrated into the main repos. Try to add the following to your apt package lists:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

(Easiest way to add it is through synaptic > packages > add repository > reload package lists)

Now, as I have an Nvidia card, I couldn't check the above. I actually took it from a German computer website (heise open news), where someone had quite the same problems.

Pls keep us posted if it worked - and remember: these are bleeding edge drivers which are experimental. Although the guys in Germany could activate 3D and work stable, I can't guarantee anything. If the Edgers drivers do not work stable under your configuration, you'll have to revert to the old setup and for the time live without desktop effects.

And, of course, back-up, back-up, back-up...

Please be careful about installing any drivers for ati right now. Although i've managed to uninstall drivers acquired by 2 different methods i have also had to reinstall Jaunty twice because of trying other methods.

I'm hoping that things will get better for atic cards sometime soon

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Yup, I'll create a backup first and then try out the experimental drivers.

Will keep you posted about it soon!

Thanks to both!

Cheers!
Sunny :)
