ssh: Could not resolve hostname: Name or service not known

Asked by kiri caleb

~$ ssh acegid_server@acegid-01
ssh: Could not resolve hostname : Name or service not known

since a colleague of mine restarted the server it been giving us different responses , the latest is these "Name or service not known"
and am just starting Linux find my way around it and i need assistance on how to connect the the server..

have also tried pinging the hostname , gave me this response " icmp_seq=3 Destination Host Unreachable"

and the first time we tried connecting to server after restarting it , it showed 'ssh: connect to host acegid-01 port 22: No route to host '
so these all have been the various issues we been facing...

would appreciate your speedy response

Then check the routing table on the system. If there is a route to the IP then follow that through the network. If not then the default gateway will be used.

Is this in a home setup or is this a business network?

Ubuntu uses a local DNS server to cache DNS resolutions but will call out to the DNS server on the network for resolution if the record is uncached.
Is this a home setup or corporate?

OK, on your own PC (I assume Windows) run:

ipconfig /all

You'll see some lines specifying your DNS servers. Can you ping those from the Linux system? If you can then update the nameserver line in /etc/resolv.conf to one of those lines then retry connecting to things

did an ipconfig on command prompt before
will do again now

so wanna ask, would it be possible to get a bit of your free time today , on a zoom call at your preferred time
so we could trash this problem once and for all

what do u think ?

I have time tomorrow at about 7pm GMT. I don't think it's wise to invite strangers to your network though.

You set DNS in that file. Verify you can ping the server first then set DNS. If it works then you can set the network configuration more permanently. It's all. I'm going to do. A ping and a file update
