replace Audacity with Tenacity

Asked by elhoir

may i suggest to replace Audacity and put Tenacity in repos instead?
my main concern is this thread:

particularly, these lines:

"Audacity's source code is currently released under the GNU General Public License version 2 (GPLv2). We intend to update the license to GPLv3 to enable support for new technologies not compatible with GPLv2 (i.e. - VST3, which is compatible with GPLv3).

Although we may choose any license for the code that we have written ourselves, we do not have this ability when it comes to code written by additional contributors. The purpose of the CLA is to provide future flexibility in altering (i.e. - uplicensing, dual licensing) for the entire Audacity project, not just the parts of the code that we have written ourselves."

That means, that all Audacity code can be close when Muse Group wants to, which is not acceptable by any means.

What do you think?

Thanks in advance.

1. On which basis do you conclude that Muse Group might be allowed to turn Audacity into a closed software program?

2. Ubuntu copies most packages from Debian (to avoid double packaging work), and I have not seen a package with tenacity in Debian yet. For creating a tenacity package in Ubuntu, the first step must be that Debian create a package. Asking a question here in Ubuntu is not sufficient.

The Contributor License Agreement (CLA) is relevant only if you want to contribute and not when you want to use the software.
My understanding is that audacity will still be covered by GPLv3 (instead of GPLv2).

For a request that Debian create a .deb package of tenacity, see
