ubuntu 23.10 fails to find wi-fi adapter
I upgraded to Ubuntu 23.10 this morning and when the system restarted
it would no longer connect to wifi. The Wi-Fi section of the Settings
application says, "No Wi-Fi Adapter Found."
The file /etc/network/
wlp0s20f3:Intel Corporation Device a0f0
When I run "lshw -C network" I get the paragraph:
*-network UNCLAIMED
description: Network controller
product: Wi-Fi 6 AX201
vendor: Intel Corporation
physical id: 14.3
bus info: pci@0000:00:14.3
version: 20
width: 64 bits
clock: 33MHz
resources: iomemory:600-5ff memory:
and when I run "lspci" I get---among other things:
00:14.3 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wi-Fi 6 AX201 (rev 20)
Can someone tell me how to fix this? Do I need to install new
drivers?

Thank you for responding. In the transcript below I am logged in as root so there was no need for sudo.
The problem I am having just appeared immediately after I did the standard ubuntu upgrade. The machine restarted at the end without a wifi connection.

The firmware files are there (albeit in compressed format). There are several messages also for other devices that the firmware could not be loaded. So it seems to me that the program for loading the firmware does not work as desired.
I am sorry. but I do not know how to search further. There is https:/
Maybe somebody else has some additional ideas. I am at my wits' end.

Thank you very much Manfred for all your help. If/when I resolve this issue I will post here with the solution.
When I go into the "sound" section of the Settings application it lists the "Device Output" as "Dummy Output"---and nothing more. It used to give a menu containing "internal speakers" and "headphone." Either this is a separate issue or it is related and the problem is more basic than just networking as you suggest.

I uncompressed all the zst files directly under /lib/firmware and now
the system recognizes my wifi adapter and I can connect! Some of the
zst entries were actually symlinks to files in subdirectories so I was
careful to follow them and uncompress and relink there as well, but as
of right now I haven't uncompressed everything rooted under
/lib/firmware and maybe I need to because I am still having problems
with audio.
I consider this problem solved. Thank you Manfred and Andrew for
helping me with this.
